Analysis: Fanfiction

When I first started as a fanfic writer, I just couldn't put my finger on how can fanfiction be so...divisive among some people. Some people love them, some hate them and some others are...disgusted by them in a really twisted way.

Me? Let's just say it's like talking with a person. No, seriously.

I do not know if you noticed, but when you see the first chapter of an author, you can guess what kind of personality does he and his story have. For example:

- Upbeat, happy-go-lucky, bad grammar. - Beginner, a kid, too idealist.

- Takes his pace, defining a good personality on characters, with a thematic. - Experienced, talented, perhaps knows himself and/or others around him too well.

- First person narrative domain with good measures of snark, reflexible. - Smart and possible asocial person who has problems reaching out to other out of his circle.

- ...Fanservice, too much moe, somewhat cliché reactions and very classic view of villains. - Really immature people, people who really doesn't know how to reach people or WillieG.R. (very special case)

...But since we both write Touhou fanfiction, who can blame him? ...Well, maybe me, but that's besides the point.

Bear in mind, YMMV. Also, the story can develop to a new area, making more enjoyable reading said story.

Look, I'm no expert on this subject, nor I really don't want to bash anything but...to all fanfic writers out there, do write what you want...but don't overuse the same formula, use too much clichés, overuse fanservice or even overuse snark. It won't make your story good. On the contrary, people might roll his eyes and ignore your story altogether.

But overall...fanfiction is really, really weird. Be careful.
